Jim Russell is a partner in our Business Law, Entertainment Law and Financial Services Law groups. He joined Dentons’ Toronto office in 2014 from another Canadian law firm.
Jim focuses his practice on the motion picture, television and entertainment industries. His expertise encompasses production and project financing, corporate and syndicated financing, international and inter-provincial co-productions and co-ventures, and copyright. He has extensive experience in safeguarding intellectual property and negotiating documentation related to the structuring of production companies and entertainment ventures, as well as in the financing, production and exploitation of film, television and transmedia works.
Jim is a regular speaker on entertainment industry topics. He has made presentations on international treaty co-productions for a variety of audiences. He was also a speaker at the Entertainment, Advertising and Media Law Symposium held by the Law Society of Upper Canada in April 2011.
In his lending and restructuring practice, Jim focuses on a variety of lending, credit and structured-finance transactions, both national and international in scope. His practice involves advising clients on all aspects of personal property security, discounting and financing of accounts receivable, mergers and acquisitions as well as business and commercial law matters generally. Jim has been involved in numerous national and international syndicated banking and loan transactions. He also has considerable expertise in copyright security and project financing.
In November 2007, Lexpert Magazine named Jim as one of the “Rising Stars - Leading Lawyers under 40”, an annual award honouring a select number of lawyers under the age of 40. He is peer-rated as a leading entertainment lawyer in the annual Canadian Legal Lexpert survey. Jim was also recognized as one of Canada’s leading lawyers in the area of entertainment law in the 2008 through 2014 editions ofThe Best Lawyers in Canada (Woodward/White), which also named him Lawyer of the Year in Entertainment Law. He has been recognized in the 2013 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in entertainment law, and has been included in the 2009 through 2014 editions of the Lexpert/American Lawyer Magazine Top 500 Lawyers in Canada.
