in the corporate and commercial field and routinely advises on banking and
secured financing, securities, mergers and acquisitions, health law,
administrative law and related litigation.
Jeff is lead provincial counsel for a
statutory federal banking agency and a number of major national trust and insurance
corporations, and is Newfoundland counsel to a wide range of national and
international corporations involved in various fields of endeavour, including
the health care, manufacturing, transportation, mining, communications and petrochemical
industries. He has also held directorships in a Newfoundland and Labrador based public company and a
number of closely-held corporations involved in a variety of
Jeff is a director in the firm Benson Buffett, named as
a Top 10 Law Firm in Atlantic Canada by Canadian Lawyer magazine since 2005, and
is the former chair of its management committee.
Jeff has long served as secretary and executive committee member of the
Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and as chair of its annual fundraising gala
committee, and he is the founding chair of the Board of Trustees of the NSO
Foundation. He also serves as secretary and legal counsel for the Art
Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Jeff is also very active
in the professional organizations governing the practice of law. He
chaired the Board of Governors of the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and
Labrador from 2007 to 2013 and remains a Governor. He is a former President of the Law Society of Newfoundland and
Labrador, has chaired the Law Society's Advisory Council, complaints
authorization committee, unauthorized practice committee and Law Society Act and
rules committee, and has lectured on corporate and commercial law at its annual
bar admissions course. He has served as a member of the Canadian Bar
Association's gender/equality committee and as the Newfoundland and Labrador
Branch National Executive nominee. He has also served the Ministry of Justice
and Attorney General of Canada Judicial Advisory Committee and the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Appointments Board.
