Ian is a Director in the firm’s Construction/Surety Law, Real Estate Law , including oil and gas/energy law and Litigation sections. Ian has been recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer Rising Star in 2012 and 2013. He was also selected for inclusion in the 2013 and 2014 editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Construction Law.
Ian has presented seminars and has authored/co-authored several articles on a variety of topics concerning the construction industry for many client groups including the State Bar of Texas (Construction Law Section), the Greater Houston Builders Association, and the University of Texas Continuing Legal Education Program.
Ian currently authors a monthly article on residential construction issues for The Metropolitan Builder (since 2012), and previously authored a column entitled “Legal Lines” that was published monthly in the Houston Builder Magazine by the Greater Houston Builders Association from 2005 to 2008. Ian also participates within the energy industry by speaking on a variety of topics for client groups and the Association of Energy Service Companies (Health, Safety and Environmental Committee: Accidents Happen – How to Mitigate the Damages).
Ian’s practice is centered on representing developers, operators, general contractors, subcontractors, architects, engineers, lending institutions, homebuilders, brokers, homeowners, and individuals in corporate, business and real estate disputes. He has had extensive courtroom experience having represented clients in both jury and bench trials, arbitrations proceedings, and having argued cases on appeal. Ian’s practice has included issues such as construction contract defaults (on behalf of owners, sureties and others), workouts, liens, lender liability, wrongful death, breach of contract, warranty, error and omission, indemnity, and document preparation.
With respect to Ian’s oil and gas/energy law practice particularly in the oil field services sector, he has handled down-hole failure litigation, pipeline rupture litigation, wrongful death litigation, operating agreement litigation (master service agreements for drilling and workover services), and oil and gas lease litigation. Typically involved in both practice areas is the handling of major catastrophic loss investigations, evaluations of safety programs and protocols, and OSHA and PHMSA investigations, hearings and citation defense. Ian has handled these disputes in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arkansas, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Pennsylvania.
