EUGENE A. SCHOON, a litigation partner in the Chicago office of Sidley Austin LLP,
focuses on product liability defense, with particular emphasis on
pharmaceutical products and medical devices. He has extensive experience in
defending cases involving anticoagulant drugs, cholesterol lowering drugs,
antifibrinolytics, antipsychotics, plasma derivatives, implants and other
medical products. He has been engaged frequently as national coordinating and
trial counsel in cases pending in several states. He has defended third party
payer cases, consumer class actions and MDL proceedings. Gene has tried jury
cases in Illinois, Texas, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and South Carolina
and prepared cases in other jurisdictions. Gene has handled several major
matters for healthcare clients including False Claims Act Defense, medical
liability and tort reform cases. He has argued appeals in several federal courts
of appeal and state appellate courts.

Lead counsel for the defendant in an MDL involving more than
a dozen class actions based on allegations that an antibacterial hand wash is
not effective and may lead to bacterial resistance.
Co-lead counsel for Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals in an
MDL and coordinated state court proceedings involving hundreds of cases alleging
injury from an antifibrinolytic drug used during open heart surgery.
Lead counsel efending class action
lawsuits involving aspirin, probiotic, and other consumer products.
Co-lead defense counsel in thalidomide litigation involving
allegations of congenital abnormalities.
Lead defense counsel for a genetic testing laboratory
accused of failing to detect genetic mutations.
