J. Hendel is a partner in the Madrid firm of Araoz & Rueda. Before
joining the firm in 1997, he was a corporate associate and later Of
Counsel in New York and Paris offices of a leading global law firm. He
started his legal career as judicial law clerk to the Hon. Peter C.
Dorsey, United States Judge for the District of Connecticut, after
obtaining a J.D. from the University of Connecticut (Cum laude) and a B.A. from Wesleyan University (Magna Cum Laude).
Having practiced for over 25 years in an international context, the
larger portion of this time being based in Europe, Mr. Hendel has
extensive experience in international financial transactions,
particularly secured transactions and other structured and leveraged
financings involving a wide range of projects and assets, and in
advising on international mergers and acquisitions.
In the area of international arbitration, he has acted as sole
arbitrator, Chair or co-arbitrator in numerous arbitral proceedings both
ad hoc and under the auspices of institutions such as The
International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), The London Court of
International Arbitration (LCIA), The American Arbitration Association
(AAA), The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), The Hong Kong
International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and the Corte de Arbitraje de la Cámara de Comercio de Madrid.
He acts regularly as counsel in arbitrations in the international
context and in proceedings under the rules of Spanish arbitral
Mr. Hendel is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), the New
York State Bar Association (NYSBA), the International Bar Association
(IBA) and other professional associations, and is admitted to practice
in New York (1985), England and Wales (1995), Paris (1996) and Madrid
(2000), and thus is simultaneously an attorney, solicitor, avocat and abogado. Born and educated in the United States, he is a dual US-French citizen.
He is Chair of the Madrid Chapter of NYSBA’s International Practice
Section, co-National Representative for Spain of the IBA’s Mediation
Committee and a member of the Governing Board of the Club Español de Arbitraje, the European Counsel of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Asociación Latinoamericana de Arbitraje (ALARB) and the LCIA’s European Council.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of
the Global Panel of Neutrals of the International Institute for
Conflict, Prevention & Resolution (CPR), an Accredited Mediator of
the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) and a Mediator of the
Centro de Mediación y Solución de Conflictos (CEMED). He is also a member and treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the American School of Madrid.
Hendel has frequently served as an arbitrator in the Willem C. Vis
International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Vienna and in
preparatory competitions in Madrid, as well as in similar Spanish
language competitions. He has been an adjunct professor of law at
Madrid’s Instituto de Empresa, teaching International Contracts in its
international LLM, and has lectured on international arbitration in the
context of international M&A and project finance transactions at
Madrid’s Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and on the drafting of
arbitration clauses at Madrid’s Universidad Pontificia de Comillas
