Alan Hobkirk joined the firm in 1980 as an articled student and became a partner in 1987. Alan advises and represents clients in a wide variety of matters, including estate disputes, Wills Variation Act proceedings, breach of trust, elder abuse, constructive trust claims, committeeship applications, contested passing of executors’ accounts, personal injury, sport and products liability, insurance coverage issues, contract and real property disputes, and professional negligence. In addition, he acts in defamation and employment law matters, including wrongful dismissal actions and employment contract disputes. He has appeared before the Supreme Court of BC, the Court of Appeal, and various provincial, national and international administrative panels.
Outside the courtroom, Alan has been active in a number of professional and community organizations, including Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at the University of British Columbia Law School, guest instructor for both the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC and the Professional Legal Training Course program. Prior to joining the firm, Alan was a member and team captain of the Canadian National Field Hockey Team, with whom he competed in numerous international events including the 1976 Summer Olympic Games and 1971, 1975, 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games. He has served as a director/trustee of many community organizations, including Sport BC, the BC Field Hockey Association, the Counselling Group, City In Focus and St. John's (Shaughnessy) Anglican Church. He is a member of the Canadian Olympic Field Hockey Endowment Fund.
Alan obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He is a Rhodes Scholar and studied at Oxford University's Jesus College (B.A., 1976). In 1979, Alan graduated from the University of British Columbia Law School (LL.B.). He is a five-time winner of the UBC's Big Block Award and the recipient of the Bobby Gaul Memorial Trophy as Outstanding Sportsman at UBC (1979). He was inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Alan is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and of the Wills and Estates, Elder Law, Civil Litigation, and Insurance Law sections of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch. He is also an associate member of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia.
