Jones, King, Downs & Peel, P.C., is a law firm serving Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee and the surrounding regions of southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. The firm limits its practice to trusts and estates, including estate planning, estate and trust administration, charitable planning and administration, and fiduciary litigation. Members of the firm, with over 50 years of combined experience, are Nell King Bieger, Erin S. Downs and Robert F. Peel.
Homer A. Jones, Jr., founded the firm in the mid-1970s, when he decided to shift his primary attention from his banking and hotel businesses to the practice of law. He pursued additional legal studies in the areas of estate and business planning at Harvard Law School, Miami University School of Law, and the University of Tennessee College of Law. The excellence he achieved in his profession was recognized by his election in 1985 as the first Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel from our region. Fellows are selected on the basis of professional reputation and ability in the fields of trusts and estates and on the basis of having made substantial contributions to these fields through lecturing, writing, teaching and bar activities. Homer remained active in the practice until shortly before his death on January 23, 2011.
Nell King Bieger joined the practice in 1988 after working as a certified public accountant, business lawyer and entrepreneur. Homer and Nell formed Jones and King, P.C., in 1991. Erin S. Downs joined the practice in 1996 with nine years experience in trusts and estates, both in private practice and as Trust Counsel for Crestar Bank in Richmond, Virginia. Erin was admitted to the firm in 1998. Robert F. Peel joined the firm as an associate in 2005 and was admitted to the firm on January 1, 2010.
Nell was elected to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 1998, and Erin was elected in 2006. Nell and Erin are the only current ACTEC fellows between Knoxville, Tennessee, and Roanoke, Virginia. Nell and Erin are also the only attorneys in the Tri-Cites region to have been named to The Best Lawyers in America in the area of trusts and estates.
