Gregg D. Barton - Perkins Coie
"Gregg is an outstanding Washington tax attorney. He is responsive, thorough, and creative in his advice, and he is also genuinely collegial with others. He is a valued advisor to AOL and other Time Warner divisions."
Shawn Cox - Tax Counsel
AOL, LLC
Brian W. Berglund - Bryan Cave
"Brian's analytical ability and years of experience enable him to provide thoughtful, thorough, and, most importantly, practical legal advice regarding a wide variety of benefit law issues. He listens carefully to client questions and comments and he responds quickly and clearly with analysis and advice aimed directly at the issue. I have worked with Brian for almost 20 years and have never been disappointed in any aspect of his work."
Michael Murray - Associate General Counsel
Anheuser-Busch Inc.
William L. Cole - Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp
"Bill is an extremely insightful, strategic Labor and Employment attorney. Regardless of the complexity of the matter, he is someone I know will consider not only legal strategy, but business practicalities in providing labor and employment advice and litigation options. His demeanor and personality enable SPE executives to develop a trust and confidence in his advice, which as the head of the Labor and Employment Legal Department of Sony Pictures, I deem critical. He understands the need to have the appropriate level attorney in his office perform work for Sony Pictures so that financial economies are taken advantage of."
Jean Bonini - Executive Vice President, Labor Relations
Sony Pictures
Kevin J. Culligan - Heller Ehrman
"Kevin is one of the best IP lawyers I have ever worked with. He has an amazing ability to reduce complex issues and technology into simple concepts that business people can understand. He consistently develops innovative litigation strategies that help us achieve our ultimate business goal."
Keith Agisim - Associate General Counsel, Global Intellectual Property
Bank of America
Jamie Gorelick – WilmerHale
"Jamie Gorelick is a superb lawyer with broad experience in civil, investigative, and government matters. Jaime brings great judgment and integrity to such matters."
Brackett Denniston - Senior Vice President and General Counsel
General Electric Co.
Gary N. Horlick – WilmerHale
"Gary Horlick is at the top of his game and one of the premier international trade lawyers. Not only does Mr. Horlick offer a vast wealth of substantive knowledge and experience, I have found him to be extremely efficient and cost-effective. He works well with other counsel to achieve the best result for the client and avoids the parochial behavior that can interfere with achieving the simplest and best solution for a business issue. I would highly recommend Mr. Horlick and his team for international trade work."
Craig Glidden - Senior Vice President & General Counsel
Chevron Phillips Chemical Company
Eugene D. Martenson – Huie, Fernambucq & Stewart
"I am in-house counsel for Honda North America, Inc. and have had the pleasure of knowing De for more than 15 years. He has tried many serious product liability cases for us with consistently excellent results. He is among our top five attorneys in the country in terms of quality and responsiveness. De is who I affectionately refer to as our "trial horse," as he is never afraid to try the big exposure case in the hell hole jurisdiction against the big shot plaintiff attorney. However, De also always gives me his honest assessment of our chances of success, which is invaluable to me."
Brad J. Safon - Senior Corporate Counsel
Honda North America, Inc.
Bernard Nash – Dickstein Shapiro
"Bernie has been an integral part of one of our key legal programs, and we have come to rely on him not only for contacts and facts, but also for his strategic sense and ability to work with us on longer-term goals.
In other words, he is not only smart and well connected; he is helpful and responsive as well."
Kent Bernard - Vice President and Assistant General Counsel
Pfizer Inc.
Jeffrey S. Portnoy – Cades Schutte
"Mr. Portnoy is as good as it gets in terms of effective and experienced counsel, especially on matters requiring local expertise and understanding of the dynamics of the local court's personalities and processes. He has handled a host of matters, large and small, for Verizon (and before that GTE) over the years, and has done so with a deftness of touch that is without peer. On one very substantial class action matter in court (concluded successfully for us), he knew exactly when to make a very pointed response to an argument about "these lawyers from Washington" lodged by the other side - which bundled together all the traits you want from counsel (articulate, smart, tough, spot-on tone). Apart from professional expertise, he's extremely well rounded in a host of other ways that make him a great guy to be around."
John Walker - Associate General Counsel/Deputy Head of Litigation
Verizon
Richard Susko – Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton
"I can only speak of Brick in superlatives. Nobody has greater depth, experience, and practical wisdom in the areas of executive compensation and Title I of ERISA. Insofar as such a thing can even be contemplated, he is THE industry standard to which all others are compared in the world of benefits and executive compensation law. Technically an expert, he is also uncommonly practical and responsive. These are traits that no doubt finds great receptivity from the "A" team of diverse clients who consult him, including broker-dealers, asset managers, major multinational corporations, and executives. The "ancient regime" - the legal world in which benefits practitioners have been residing for years - is now giving rise to new unprecedented challenges: 409A, new proxy disclosure rules and significant changes to Title I under the Pension Protection Act. There is simply no better individual to advise across all of these matters, or who has the range of experience, thought, reason and polish."
Steven Rabitz - Senior Benefits Lawyer
Lehman Brothers
David B. Tulchin – Sullivan & Cromwell
"I have worked with David for nearly nine years on various high-stakes matters involving complicated jury trial work, extensive motion practice, and many appeals. The matters have been in both state and federal courts and have involved massive discovery, complicated legal theories, and strategic legal positioning, negotiating, and planning. In all of these various activities, his performance was outstanding. When I work on a matter with David, I know that I have a terrific advocate and great lawyer (as well as a great firm backing him up) who is as committed and focused on achieving the right result for my client as I am.
David's legal skills are of the very highest caliber - his oral advocacy to juries, trial judges, and appellate judges is without peer in my experience. His writing is terrific, and (perhaps most importantly) his legal analysis and judgment are excellent - insightful, complete, forward looking, and correct.
As a trial lawyer, it is always at least a little disconcerting to have to sit and listen to another up on his or her feet in court. When David is at work, I am confident that I have the best advocate I could want making the best argument we could have in an effective way."
Steve Aeschbacher - Associate General Counsel
Microsoft Corporation

In response to our new initiative to collect client comments for lawyers listed in Best Lawyers, we have received a number of questions from marketing directors. Although not all the questions apply to every state or firm, we thought it would be best to share all the answers with our primary contacts in every listed firm in case you get similar questions from your lawyers.
The client comments will appear on the Best Lawyers website, not in our annual print edition.
The methodology used to select the list of Best Lawyers remains absolutely unchanged. The comments that are collected over the coming months will not influence an attorney’s listing in any way. We continue to believe that all good lawyers have clients who appreciate their work so that basing listings on client comments is problematic, even unreliable. On the other hand, thoughtful, first-hand comments from clients can be helpful to potential clients in understanding the particular strengths of a lawyer once he or she has already been listed on the basis of peer review.
Editors from Best Lawyers will not be contacting any clients to engage in discussions about the lawyers who provided their names. A few lawyers have specifically asked us to pass requests for comments along directly to clients, and we are happy to do that. Otherwise, clients will be contacted about a comment only if the comment needs significant editing; if so, we will contact the client by email to approve the suggested changes.
All of our primary contacts in each firm will be emailed a copy of the comments on their lawyers before they are posted on the Best Lawyers website. Contacts will be asked to share the comments with the lawyers for their review, especially to ensure that the comments do not refer to a pending legal matter.
Upon request, we will try to make the client comments available to firms and lawyers. Most of the clients who have sent comments have given us permission to attribute the comments to them. If requested by the lawyer, we will be happy to ask clients who have given us permission for attribution if the comments can be used by the lawyer or the lawyer’s firm in other contexts.
We are not soliciting client comments from lawyers in states where testimonials are prohibited. Best Lawyers has researched the rules from each state’s bar association regarding the use of client testimonials and endorsements. In the seven states where these are prohibited – Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wyoming – we are not contacting any lawyers for comments. We will also be monitoring these rules for changes – Florida, for example, is considering a reversal of its ban on testimonials and endorsements – and will respond accordingly.
We will exclude comments that do not comply with state bar requirements. A few states do not prohibit the use of testimonials and endorsements but have restrictions on them. In New York, for example, testimonials and endorsements may not refer to a pending legal matter. A few states bar testimonials by celebrities or public figures. We will work to ensure that all of these restrictions are enforced in all our client comments, not just those in states that require them.
We will post appropriate disclaimers on all client comments, not just where states require them. A few require disclaimers stating that testimonials are the opinions of the people who provide them; that no two cases are alike; and that the result in one case does not guarantee a similar result in another case. We will post these disclaimers on all our client comments, regardless of the state.
Best Lawyers’ rigorous peer-review methodology remains the cornerstone of our lists, as it has for 25 years. We believe that thoughtful comments from clients, especially attributed ones, will make Best Lawyers even more useful to potential clients and referring lawyers.
